This authentic African Djembe drum from Ghana measures 25 inches tall with a head size of 12 to 13 inches. These Djembes drums weigh between 13 and 18 pounds. They are handcrafted by experienced craftsmen and carved with a simple traditional design.
Construction is from a single piece of legally harvested Masonia wood. A special hard wax is applied to the drum’s bottom and bearing edge. The bearing edge is the edge of the drum where the head stretches over the shell. The wax reduces the loss of moisture in the wood which helps to prevent cracking. The inner and outer shell surfaces are treated with a coconut oil finish. This brings out the natural beauty and hydrates the Masonia wood and also helps to reduce cracking.
The Djembe is laced using durable, stretch free alpine rope. The lacing method is straightforward and easy to understand. This means you can easily tune the drum or replace the head.
The goatskin head on this drum is a medium to heavy weight. The spine is centered for maximum performance and durability.
These drums have an earthy round tone. The bass tones are deep and full of life. The high tones cut through with clarity and character. This is one drum that has a voice of its own.
