This Bara Drum or Bendré Drum is made from a dried calabash gourd with a thin goat skin drum head stretched over a cut opening in the gourd. The drum produces a unique sound with a short decay or short ring. One might describe the voice of this drum as a "bark". This Bara does not have an open bottom, which is the traditional method for a Bara drum.
This Bara Drum was crafted in Mali, West Africa using only the finest grade materials to ensure an authentic sound and to produce true musical instrument. With Calabash Shells, attention to quality is important, not only for sound quality reasons but also durability. There are no imperfections in the gourd that can lead to cracks and other problems as the drum ages. In fact, a good Calabash gets better with age. When quality gourds are selected, such as these, you will be amazed at how light and durable they are.
Bara Drums originate primarily from Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, and Mali. The main accompanying instrument is the balafon. However, like most African Drums, you can use them to add color to any drum circle. If you are a Djembe player, your technique will easily transfer to this Hand Drum.
