The Ashiko drum is from sub-Sahara Africa. Widely used in a musical style called High Life. High Life is a blend of West African rhythms and European influence and results in a powerful dance music common in Ghana and eastern Nigeria. In Cuba the Ashiko is known as the Boku and is played during carnivals and street parades. Some consider the Ashiko to be male and the Djembe female.
